For all our medical and technological advancement, America earns a failing grade in one subject: Nutrition.

According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, the Standard American Diet is the reason we struggle with obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and many cancers. The average American diet is full of processed foods containing added sugars and unhealthy fats.

Have you watched the documentary, The C Word, by breast cancer survivor Meghan O’Hara? It features the late Dr. David Servan-Schreiber in his crusade to change the way North Americans eat. It gives a great explanation of how the Standard American Diet came to be so sad, indeed. It is also an empowering look at the benefits of research-backed nutrition after breast cancer.

Research demonstrates the link between weight management (through healthy diet, exercise, and stress reduction) and better survival rates in breast cancer. Much of this research is cited in the book, After Cancer Care, which is a must-read for all cancer survivors.

What we eat is entirely within our control. We can choose not to eat a SAD diet. We can eat whole foods, in forms as close to the earth as possible. Our post-breast cancer bodies will thank us for consuming a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts. There is only benefit to be had – there is no downside to eating healthy foods.
